Comic Corner #1: Harrow County (Vol. 1 and 2), Fables (Vol. 1)

I’ve wanted to include comic reviews, but often don’t have as much to say on a single issue or volume as I would a book. Because of this, I didn’t feel they’d necessitate a whole review of their own space-wise, and thus the idea for my Comic Corner was born!

Soon, I’ll be reorganizing/alphabetizing my comic collection, so I’ll be sharing pictures and a “comic tour” type thing – stay tuned for that eventually!

Comic Corner Mini-Reviews

Title: Harrow County Vol. 1: Countless Haints

Author: Cullen Bunn

Artist: Tyler Crook

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Described as a “southern gothic fairy tale” in the synopsis, this is one of my favorite recently published (2015) comics. I’ve read the first volume 2 times, and I never get over how gorgeous the artwork by Tyler Crook is. The watercolors are so pretty, some of the pages are big rainbows and obviously, with that, I am sold. Vol 1 collects issues #1 – 4 in total.

Even without rainbows, this introduction to Emmy, her pa, her small town & its inhabitants, and the “haints” – scary monsters that either want to help or hurt her – is completely engrossing, and I’m in love. It’s creepy but also endearing, which is a weird but wonderful combination. ✨✨✨✨✨ 5 / 5 stars

Title: Harrow County Vol. 2: Twice Told

Author: Cullen Bunn

Artist: Tyler Crook

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Volume 2 of the series collects only 3 issues of the comic – #s 5 – 8, which means it’s a little shorter, so maybe that’s why it felt slightly rushed to me. A whole new character was introduced – one that it seemed like Volume 1 should have mentioned at some point?? – and while the arc was okay, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected to.

Despite my issues with the plot in this one, the art was, again, absolutely perfect. I can’t get enough of it and wish there were lots more to each volume so I could enjoy it longer!

Title: Fables Vol. 1: Legends in Exile

Author: Bill Willingham

Artists: Lan Medina, Steve Leialoha, Craig Hamilton

Publisher: Vertigo

This was another reread for me, although this is one I haven’t read since I started my main comic collection back in 2010/2011. I love fairy tale retellings, and modernizing basically every fairy tale ever by turning them into real-world transplants living in an apartment building called Fabletown is such a fun idea that there’s no way I couldn’t like it.

There are familiar characters I’ve known since I was a little girl, rewritten to be detectives and businesswomen and more. Bits of this does get a bit wordy, but I imagine that’s just the exposition you’d expect to set up what’s going on. And throughout it all, a mystery, too! ✨✨✨✨ 4.5 / 5 stars

  1. Oooh, I really need to pick Fables back up some time soon. I read the first 3 volumes (I think) a couple of years ago and forgot to keep going. And I’ll have to move Harrow County up on my TBR! Great reviews!
