My second Comic Corner is here! I’ll be reorganizing, and probably rereading, a lot of the comics I own soon. I’m sure this will pick up once that starts! For now, it’s fun reading some newer stuff that I hadn’t already gotten to. Both of these have lots of girl power, so if that’s your thing, check these out!
Comic Corner Mini-Reviews
Title: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Vol. 1: High School Is Hell
Author: Jordie Bellaire
Artist: Dan Mora
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Anyone who knows me knows that I am absolutely obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Half of my right forearm is covered with a Buffy tattoo, and I’ve seen the show more times than I can even count. I read much of the Dark Horse Comics that came out after the end of the show’s finale, and enjoyed it, although I did feel it went a bit… off toward the end. When I heard about BOOM! Studios reboot, I was a little hesitant – but I really shouldn’t have been, because it’s incredible.
The reboot completely modernizes the series from the very beginning, and aims to follow the same basic principles while feeling totally new. The characters are changed slightly – Willow is a lesbian from the start, Cordelia is less “mean girl” and more “smart, cool girl” – but they still feel like the same characters I already know and love. The art for the new comic is SO GOOD, and some of the alternate covers for the ones in this first collection are so pretty I wish I could have them framed. I honestly loved everything about this, and can’t wait to read more and more and more! ✨✨✨✨✨ 5 / 5 stars
Title: The Mighty Thor Vol. 1: Thunder In Her Veins
Author: Jason Aaron
Artist: Russell Dauterman
Publisher: Marvel
I don’t read a lot of Thor ’cause big, buff, non-sarcastic superheroes are not typically my thing. That said, lady Thor is most definitely my thing, and Dr. Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir is totally amazing. The colors and art by Dauterman throughout the entire first few issues is amazing!
In addition to the normal politics of Asgard, Loki’s shenanigans, and Odin daddy issues, there’s also Jane’s cancer, which is a bit of ugly real-world bad stuff to go with all the more fantasy-based bad guys floating around. It’s easy to follow, and great for both fans of the old Thor, as well as people who haven’t really
